LAZARUS RAISED FROM THE DEAD

An exhibition at Portsmouth Cathedral
in collaboration with Jack House Gallery

Garrick Palmer made his first LAZARUS painting whilst a star student at the Royal Academy in around 1957 and went on to win the prestigious Gold Medal prize that year much to the chagrin of the then notoriously fusty and conservative President of the RA Sir Alfred Munnings. Palmer wore the criticism that his was a ghastly modernist mess of a painting as a badge of honour.

That painting formed part of a larger show of paintings with biblical subjects by Palmer originally shown in Portsmouth Cathedral in we think either 1958 or 1959. We are now delighted to collaborate with Portsmouth Cathedral to bring it back along with others made over subsequent years in what was an ongoing theme. This group of Lazarus themed artworks have been generously leant from Private Collections including one from the Towner Eastbourne and also from the Estate of Garrick Palmer, Garrick’s daughters Sarah, Emma and Vicky.

Portsmouth Cathedral will be hosting a number of events and related activities as follows:

Wednesday 21st February, for 5 weeks.
Lent Course exploring death and resurrection in the Christian tradition based on the art exhibition, Lazarus Raised. Wednesday evenings, Bishop Kenneth Room, Portsmouth Cathedral, 6.30pm.

Thursday 29th February - Lazarus Raised, though an artist's eyes.
A talk exploring the visual theology of Garrick Palmer's Lazarus series. Revd Canon Harriet Neale-Stevens.

Thursday 7th March - Q & A with Rebecca Crow
from the Jack House Gallery exploring Garrick Palmer's life and work.

Sunday 25th February and Sunday 24th March - Lazarus Raised: A Sequence of Music and Words
