ART THROUGH GLASS
Manifestations of a Cube #7
by Jeannie Driver
16th May to 19th June 2021
12-4pm Weds-Sat
A ‘drawing’ in space created by Jeannie Driver using recycled paper, charcoal, graphite, steel and a very carefully selected blue was developed to utilise the inherent limitations of the Gallery window space for our Art Through Glass series of exhibitions. Taking as it’s starting point her series of drawings on paper, ‘Manifestations of a Cube’ this work extends the drawing Cube #7 into an installed wall drawing, “..part of my overarching approach of lifting the drawing off the page, utilising my drawing system of charcoal coated ‘independent lines’ combined with solid panels suggesting form. This work situated inside a window, becomes a safe space to pull the drawing ‘spine’ away from the wall surface to increase the depth and to experiment with increasing the three dimensional properties.”
Jeannie Driver on her materials: “I have always been enamoured by ephemerality so reusing materials from one work to another is part of my practice….my approach utilises traditional materials of paper, charcoal and graphite. Charcoal is applied to shredded paper strips through repetitive processes to create independent lines removed from a connecting ground. A significant development has been to stabilise and fix charcoal powder to create the deepest velvety light absorbing black. Graphite is a recent development, making connections with the materiality of ships, and ambiguous presentation of surface. In works such as Flat Corner, the graphite is built from multiple layers of repetitive mark making to form a surface.”

We will also be opening the Gallery to show some of Jeannie Driver’s recent drawings for her Quay Art exhibition ‘Dazzle & Disrupt’ which opens to the public on Monday 17th May. For more information about Jeannie Driver and to read a very good recent interview with Driver click here.
CYAN BLUE
A very particular blue was selected for the piece “it sneaked in the work ‘The Space Between’ at Quay arts, but now making a full appearance! Inspired by the summer sky, I first introduced blue, in my usually monochromatic palette last summer, for the drawing Onwards and Outwards a commissioned drawing for the We Believe poster trail by Portsmouth Creates. This activity coincided with reading, Unfold This Moment by Martin Herbert, who references Carol Bove, (one of my favourite sculptors, ) discussing the perceptive qualities of the colour CYAN. My recent work, The Space Between, Split and Flat corner, whilst at first appearing monochromatic, have a recess of CYAN, to utilise this suggestion of a floating surface.”
