Rangknit workshops

‘lets knit a home!’ with Pooja Shah

Following on from my exhibition at Jack House Gallery in August 2022 I am back again in Portsmouth to invite people of all backgrounds to join my workshop and be part of a community ‘conversation’ around knitting and the traditional art of Rangoli!”.

Pooja Shah’s work approaches the practice of knitting to produce not mere objects that are domestic or could be domesticated but a tapestry of conversation, actions, gesture and emotions reminding a migrant of her/his left home.

Why we knit, where we knit, what we make and what it means to us were all questions raised in the last knitting workshop hosted by Pooja Shah at the Gallery and the new workshops will expand on the ideas and techniques that she has developed to create the large and unique Rangoli inspired pieces that formed the basis for her PHD research at Portsmouth University and which is now an ongoing project. The practice of knitting crosses social and cultural boundaries and brings people together in a common activity which can be both therapeutic, practical and beautiful and which for Shah, as an immigrant, evokes both home and family.

This workshop focuses on knitters who want to explore a different approach to knitting, rather than producing a dull domestic object. This workshop is structured (detailed structure will be provided upon reserving your seat) to crossover Indian culture and textile techniques, producing a tapestry of conversations, gestures, emotions and relationships. You can bring your own story, technique and culture! Join her in building a home together! A home through knitting!

Do be aware that in these sessions you will not learn the fundamental knitting but a unique way of knitting a circle with 4 straight double-pointed needles. It is therefore aimed for an intermediate and experienced knitter and not to a beginner or non-knitter.

The work you will produce will remind you of your home in Portsmouth wherever you go next! It will be a lovely addition to your home or a gift for someone made by you!

All required materials will be provided. Just bring your heart and soul!

Session size: 7 knitters and 1 tutor.

The course structure can be seen here
