IMAGES OF LOS ANGELES
A show of 22 artists living & working in LA
Curated by DEREK BOSHIER
“Los Angeles was the kind of place where everybody was from somewhere else and nobody really dropped anchor. It was a transient place. People drawn by the dream, people running from the nightmare. Twelve million people and all of them ready to make a break for it if necessary. Figuratively, literally, metaphorically — any way you want to look at it — everybody in L.A. keeps a bag packed. Just in case”. –Michael Connelly

VERY SPECIAL THANKS to the esteemed filmmaker James Scott who made the promotional film for ‘Images of Los Angeles’ and has artworks featured in the show. James Scott is an old friend of Derek Boshier’s and has a long career in film making. Here he is on how he made the film under very challenging Covid restricted conditions:
“ When Derek came up with the idea for a promo film for our exhibition, I came up with lots of weird and wonderful ideas like a story set in the fifties of a young girl, a student, leaving home in England and flying to LA with her friend to discover all the wonderful and amazing things she had read about in Hollywood. All done with period footage of the time and a voice over. It did not take long to realize the impracticality of this approach, with the constraints of time and no budget. Instead, I thought why not get all the artists involved to do a selfie video defining their practice in relation to Los Angeles and we would piece them together. Later came the idea of the freeways which are iconic to Los Angeles and my love of suspense. Astra found the perfect dramatic music and we began to put it all together. It was a fun project and without these wonderful artists with Derek at the helm it would not have happened. Thank you everybody!” James Scott 2021
I’d still like to see that 1950’s set movie mind you….
James Scott’s film ‘Fragments’ about Derek Boshier which premiered in 2019 is one of the best profiles of an artist I’ve seen. It perfectly captures his friend the man, the artist and his practice gently and informatively. To read more about James Scott and his long career in film making click here.
