'Time, place and identity are important to me. I am an immigrant stuck in limbo between the past and present worlds, unable to feel at home in my adopted country yet no longer having a sense of belonging in my home country, all at once alienated and anonymous wherever I may be. The imagery from the past and present of my surrounding world is brought together in the timeless whole of my art – I am the faceless silhouette of a labourer or a cleaner, depicting the anonymity and marginalisation of such existences as well as the impotence within the wider socio-political context'. One of the many definitions of the word ‘assimilation’ is ‘the adoption, by a minority group, of the customs and attitudes of the dominant culture’. ‘Assimilation’ is the title of one of Agata Wojcieszkiewicz’s powerful mixed media paintings that feature in this solo exhibition of work ‘Assimilations’. The show’s title refers to the many processes that the artist, and others like her, have to undergo to make a life as immigrants, in her case from Poland. These are the processes of adapting and adjusting, absorbing and of being absorbed into the mundanities of our culture and life. These assimilations can also be seen as the processes that the artist uses to understand their experiences and observations and translate them into a visual language of ideas.
