Art of Books
a group show
Private View 24th November 6-8pm
Exhibition 24th November-24th December 2016
There is no better combination than Art and Books and this show is about artists' responses to words and stories and the joys of what lies be between the covers. Some artists make books - Graham Smith's are lino printed illustrations to Rudyard Kipling's poems, Batool Showghi makes jewel beautiful multi media photo albums, John Dilnot's books are quirky manuals for modern life. Other artists are fired by books - Chris Orr RA is inspired by a Portsmouth great Charles Dickens in particular 'Bleak House' and 'A Tale of Two Cities'. His prints and drawings will be shown alongside Mychael Barratt's 'London Particular' which too looks to Dickens but the Bard's jottings are also a theme.
A cornucopia of books and prints and literary inspired artworks includes Kate Boxer's bold portraits of her writing heros. Publishing house Enitharmon Editions are back with us with a selection of artist collaborative publications including an illustrated book of poetry commemorating the bicentennial of the abolition of the trade slave. 'I have Found a Song' includes prints by Paula Rego & Sonia Boyce amongst others.
